I have to admit something ----- way back --- a long time ago now --- back when I was approx 16 (years old), I was at a school camping trip to an island called Goold Island. Yes ------ hehehe - that's how it is spelled, pronounced Goo (as in goo-goo, the 'real/true' sounds that a baby makes), with an LD on the end.
It is 1 of the many islands off the coast of North Queensland. On the last day of the camp ----- I noticed a fantastic healthy dendrobium growing on a tree ------ basically growing low down on a tree ---- not high up at all. The canes were so strong. The sun was just blazing down on it. Incredibly hot and intense sun, which just amazed me how this orchid was growing with incredible intense sun blazing down on it.
I just had to collect 1 of the canes. Just 1 cane! This shouldn't have been done - as there are actually laws - orchid gathering laws and ethical rules.
Anyway ----- I didn't foresee that the single cane that I gathered would form a colony that just keeps flourishing and surviving in the back-yard, year after year.
This particular orchid here ------ we go back a long way hehehe. Definitely some sentimental attachments with this one here. I still remember the day ------ the orchid was actually gathered on the last day of the camping trip.
And I basically put the cane in 1 large black-coloured garbage bag - which we had plenty of, and waiting for the boat/ferry to arrive in order to get back to the mainland ---------- it was very memorable -- not just with the orchid in the bag ---- but especially memorable when the 'sandflies' (very tiny biting insects that live in mud mangrove coastal areas) were demolishing my arms and legs ------- and I couldn't do anything about it, because a supposedly 'good' insect repellent - still sold here in Australia - called RID or R.I.D ----- did not work against sandflies!!! The white coloured 'repellent' cream that I packed onto my arms and legs wasn't working at all. The sandflies were behaving as if it wasn't even there. I should have brought along the tried and tested "Aerogard" repellent. I didn't know better at the time. But I know now! Lesson learned big time.
The above is a true story. It is not an admission of guilt. Ok ..... it is an admission of guilt. I don't condone doing that though these days (collecting orchids from the wild heheh ..... it was my 1 and only time!).
Also ------- I still have to check for sbro the rough length of the canes. I forgot to check yesterday - but will remember to today!
