Default aliens in my dendrobium spectabile?

Aliens? by ingiebee, on Flickr

What the heck is growing out of the rhizome? It's not a root, it's got the beginnings of leaves, but this is a huge plant! Those things are almost as thin as a thread in spots (OK, I'm exagerating, but still.... Is this how big a new cane starts out? I can't believe it! If not, what is going on do you think?

Here is a closeup

closeup by ingiebee, on Flickr

This plant was traumatized with a drastic cutting out of a compacted pot, maybe it's small and unusual due to the trauma? It still has 5 big canes (well, 4 are big)

Thinking on it, I wonder if a seed fell in there and it just looks like it's growing from the rhizome? That's probably what it is, LOL. I'm going to leave it alone and see what it is

It looks like a fern frond. Probably a spore landed in the pot and started growing. If correct, the round part will unfurl into a leaf.

Aw, bummer. Would you believe I don't own any ferns? Never have! I need to fix that, but OK, sounds like they won't play nice together, LOL. I'll take your advice and remove them, thanks rbarata 😄
