Paphiopedilum papilio-laoticus is a brand newly described orchid species from Laos. Brand new as in, within the last few months, based on the information I have seen.

I actually had a plant offered to me (and this is the first I heard of it). I won't order due to the legality issues, but I'm interested if anybody else has heard of this species and if there is any information about its habitat and how to cultivate it.

Here is a photo of the flower.

Very cool. Based on the description, it sounds like this species has a lot of potential for hybridization since the flowers are large for the section, because of the proportionately large size of the dorsal, and because of those eye spots on the dorsal. Will be interesting to see what comes of this, probably lots of new and wonderful intrasectional hybrids as well as a nice boost of new genes and features for modern complex hybridization as well.
