Thumbs up Paph's Maude's Ruby blooming

everyone just thought I would show off my blooming Paph Maude's Ruby. This is my first slipper orchid and most likely not my last I am a bit dissapointed that the color is not as intense as the photo's I have seen. But I love her anyway
Hope you all enjoy my

I absolutely am nuts over those colors! I wouldn't be disappointed with the intensity of it. But if you are it just gives you an excuse to buy another one! I LOVE it though!

Sheridan - it's just starting to bloom! Give it a chance to fully open and fully develope it's color. It'll be a charmer to be sure. Great job!

Smile Maude's Ruby

everyone so glad you all like Ruby she is so cool looking. Patience is not one of my virtues but I think Ross may be right. I should wait until she is fully bloomed and see if her color intensifies. The plant seems to be doing well not to sure when to water her so I am keeping her moist. She is in a 4inch pot....when she is done blooming should I repot her? Is there a special medium for slippers? I am already looking for other slippers to purchase. I lost one Phal today its one of the poor little ones at Lowes oh well that leaves one space open for another chid

Glad you all enjoyed Ruby Thanks for the positive comments.

On your question of whether or not to repot Ruby after she's done blooming, it depends on the last time she was repotted. If you recently bought her and are unsure I would definately repot when she's finished up. You never know what may be lurking underneath! Even if the bark looks good on top it may be like dirt in the middle. I just finished repotting one of my paphs I got at an orchid show last month and was shocked at the poor condition of the roots. I think that if I had waited any longer she'd be a goner.

As for the type of potting mix to use, they do make some especially for paph's. But I think people usually use a fine bark mix with maybe some sphag, perlite, charcoal, etc mixed in. I use medium coconut husk chips mixed with perlite and charcoal. That mix works well for as I tend to underwater so it helps things stay moist for a day or two longer. I think paphs like things a little more moist than phals but be careful if it's in fact in an older mix. Older media tends to retain moisure longer so make sure before you water. I'm definately not an expert but those tips have worked for me (so far!). Hope that helped!

Wink Repotting Paph

Thanks Sarah for the repotting info. I just purchased this Paph about 1 1/2 months ago and its in a 3 inch pot. The mix it came in is a mix of small bark pearlite and what looks like charcoal but when you touch it its moist. Would that be the stuff they call Alfor or something like that. Now I have a small bale of coconut husk that I peel off and break into pieces is that ok to use. I would like to replicate the mix it has as much as possible. Again thanks

Haha Sue, I think your right

It's a beautiful bloom for sure - Congrats.
Actually I find paphs don't mind the break down, they like a finer mix (IMHO)
I use peatmoss, fine bark and perlite.
