Default Two Paph NOID's: Identify General Type by Leaves?

Hello,

I picked up two NOID slipper orchids recently from the 1/2 price area at Paulino Gardens in Denver. Both have mottled leaves but one has ridges running down the length of its leaves.

I know this is kinda like reading tea leaves but I am wondering, is there any way to identify what sorts of flowers I might expect by looking at these Paphiopedilum leaves?

I have no clue about the one with ridges but I wouldn't be the least surprised if the one with the smooth leaves, bloomed out to be some sort of vin color.

hhhmmm.. first, they are not Phals (Phalaenopsis) but Paphiopedilum... as per the leaves, you can only say for sure so far is that they are mottled leaves (considered by most as warm growing type). If you bought them as NOID in a supermarket or similar store, most probably they are also Maudiae type. Here a link with helpfull info:

Some experienced people might be able to guess what kind of species is 'in there' if it is a very distinctive pattern. Paph. malipoense for example has very distinctive patterning that get inherited by its kids. Paph venustum also has very distinctive patterning, but I'm not sure it does pass this on to offspring.

Your first photo looks kind of like the leaves on my Iantha Stage, which are different to the others that I have because they are quite glossy, and the darker areas on the leaves are slightly raised.

Ah HA! I was just testing to see if anyone was paying attention. And you'll be very pleased to note that you passed!

Actually, I had a brain *stinky poof*. . .my apologies. *snicker*

I purchased the plants in a nice garden center where orchids are always tagged but apparently the tags were lost. They have quite a few of the Maudiae types for sale.

We usually focus on the blooms but wouldn't it be fun to see more leaf photos too? I could sure learn from that as well.

I guess I'll just have to purchase each of the Paphs you mentioned. . .for "research" purposes.

Muh ha ha

Gonna run "Google" your Iantha Stage. . .never heard of that one.

Thanks for your thoughts. As always, I sure do appreciate it and enjoy your posts.

Gwen, I think I have some photos of leaves... I love them, and its one of the reasons I was drawn to Paphs - they can look good even when not in flower! Let me troll through my hard drive and see what I have. Otherwise, I'll take some when I get home from work.

Me too! I think they're gorgeous.

That would be great! Maybe we can pin down the major types of Paph. leaves? Be fun to try.

Does anyone know anything about the leaves with the rolling waves? Is it supposed to do that? lol

OMG! This is great!!!! I'll add a couple of photos too. . .later tonight, I hope.

I've got to rush my mother in law up to the medical center this morning. She's acting "funny". It's hard to tell if it's cause for alarm or if it's just normal, old age, "funny". . .so she's got to get checked.
She's mad at me. . by the way, cause I ratted her out to the medical "fuzz".

I only have two words to say about that: *stinky poof*

Thank you for all your efforts, Shakkai!
