Default Paph. haynaldianum and patience

I'm always counseling "Patience!". I do take my own medicine, and here it paid off! I just had to share this Paph. haynaldianum, though it is still opening... three spikes, only two flowers open so far but lots of buds. I got this plant from a society auction in 2006. I did not take a picture then, so I can only guess that it was pretty pathetic (either a seedling or a small division) because I got it for $4 so I must have been the only bidder. It basically sat around, putting up with rookie mistakes, being pretty much ignored. It finally bloomed (I think with only one spike, and only one or two flowers) in 2015. Then it sat some more, putting on some good growth, however... and now here it is. I'll post again when more of the flowers are open, but I love it already. There are some newer, smaller growths that don't have spikes, so perhaps it is finally getting big enough that I'll get flowers a little more often as those mature.

Multi-floral Paphs are especially in no hurry... a new growth doesn't root for about 3 years, and only then does it even consider spiking. So they do have to get fairly substantial to get regular blooming. I think this was discussed in another thread - now you have the evidence.

Yikes you have A LOT of patience! But congrats, that waiting, and waiting some more for growths to mature is well worth it. Those blooms are very nice, and I love the large pink petal tips.

I'm patient, but not that patient, so my cure is to buy more orchids so that I have other blooms to distract me while a wait for reluctant blooming plants to do something! I have 2 Paphs that bloom only every 2 years or so...

Oh, I do that too! The way to always have something in bloom is to have lots of orchids, and to get them in bloom at different times of the year. Then I don't even notice the non-productive ones until they bloom.

Love those pink "paddles" and entire plant is beautiful. I'm also getting the hang of their culture, finally, and waiting for buds to throw me a bone.
