I'll see if I can find the article. . .but the technique that I am interested in involves tucking the roots into a ball of moss. The inside of the ball is hollow and is tucked into a small bonsai style pot. The orchid sits up kind of high on top of the moss. So, it's almost like it's growing mounted, with lots of air circulation on the inside It's very pretty.

I'll go see if I can't find that article. . .brb.

Here you go: Traditional Method of Potting

Yes, I was going to ask what Japanese potting is also. Please explain.
I have a Neofintia, but it's a free flowing hanging orchid for me.
Terri, I'm not sure what I will get. I plan on two orchids. I hope one is a glorious phal...not sure what will pop out at me. The other I hope to get a Catt. Something ready to open and will blow me away. Fragrance would put me over the top.
Having said all that, I always say those two types are my goals, yet what comes home with me is always lest expected. Usually it's four or five, not two, and usually at least two will be so young that will take another two years to blossom and drive me absolutely insane!!
Chances are I will be online posting of my new babies. If the weather cooperates! Adios!

Gwen that's a cool looking technique! It might work with my little Aer. luteo. It's certainly small enough.

I look forward to seeing what lovelys you bring home Kiki! Can't think of a nicer way to spend the day than at a greenhouse. Hope the snow lets up some for you.

Wow... I had no idea that orchids caused relationship issues for everybody else as well! My boyfriend always tells me "NO MORE ORCHIDS", but then when he needs a favor, he bribes me with a new plant... hehe. I'll have to try the rearranging trick, thanks for the tip! It will be especially helpful when the weather warms up and I start the springtime orchid gathering!

Elliot, I'll second the re-arranging trick - works every time!!

(Though how my DH didn't notice when the collection grew from 30 to 100, I'll never know! Now that its over 100, tucking in new ones is even easier! That's called the 'Forest through the Trees Trick' )

I find it very hard to shop on line with out letting my husband know since obviously he has access to account information…soo the thought has been crossing my mind to get a Wal-Mart visa card too order off of but then how do I direct the delivery…? .. LOL… and yes I’ve done all the above too rearrange the plants, hide new plants with the old…LOL…actually he’s a plant lover too he’s the one who built all my grow tables so he is tolerant to an extent…

The re-arranging trick has always worked for me. and the plants were always just a sea of green. he never really noticed numbers. hell, for all he knew it was one giant plant. and then i decided i really needed more space and traded in my 1'x3'x5' shelves with lights to a 2'x4'x6'h shelving system (this weeks little project). ive been on pins and needles for two days now. fortunatly he never goes in my grow room. how long do you think i can pull this one off? hopefully long enough to sneak in the 10 i just bought. they're due here fri afternoon.
