Paphs aren't my my favorite orchids, but this is definitely my favorite of all the Paphs I have (thanks Ray!). This plant doesn't have any of what I consider to be the two negatives of the genus. It's a very compact plant, and when it decides to bloom it doesn't dally! It was less than 2 months ago that I noticed the beginnings of the spoke this bloom is on. Plus there's another bud on it, and a second spike with two buds. It appears to be a sequential bloomer, so this could be in bloom for quite a while!

Paph henryanum parent keeps this compact, and Paph primulinum brings easy care and sequential flowering. It should typically have 2-3 flowers per spike that develop in succession, with some period when all are open possible. If you aren't a huge Paph fan but want some representative in a mixed collection this is an excellent choice.

So cute! Love the colour.

I'm getting a kink admiring your pretty paph.

Can you crop the photo just a smidge so it shows upright rather than sideways? (this works for me when nothing else does, especially with phone photos)

He turned it that way to make it easier to read the label in the photo.

I've got one of these from a different source. It has been, without question, one of the slowest growing paphs I have ever grown (and didn't die). Of course, if it doesn't shape up, it's on the short list to get shipped out to a farm where it can roam free and spend the rest of its life happily chasing bunnies or something like that.

The cochlopetalums (primulinum group) are used in hybridization because they usually produce plants that are easy to grow and bloom. They're a very good "first paph" for people who want to try growing slipper orchids. The only downside is that the flowers of intersectional hybrids are usually heavily dominated by the cochlopetalum traits, but in cases like Tropical Magic, those traits are an excellent compliment to a species like henryanum.

Primulinum hybrids are sometimes also faintly fragrant.
