buds on multi paphiopedilums. Male

The Prince Edward of York is no more!! the spike grew to around 4" but with only one very large bulb. I thoughts things weren't right and the bud has dropped off. I opened the bulb and found a large growth of fungus inside. How does this enter a bulb??
