Flowering season for a paphiopedilum leeanum Male
Default Flowering season for a paphiopedilum leeanum

Hello, my friends

I got a paphiopedilum leeanum a week ago. Paphiopedilum are new to me, so I have some questions.
First of all, a question about the flowering season for northern hemisphere. Somebody told me it was in the autumn, when days are still warm and nights are colder. Is this correct?

Thanks

No. paphiopedilum bloom mostly in the spring although they can bloom at any other time of the year. Some years they will bloom and some years they won't , so ddon't expect too much from them

Ok, I'm not sure about any special cares for this specie. I have it near a northern window, more or less 45 to 60 % relative humidity (never let it dry) and with temp of 12 to 15 ºC (winter) and 17 to 24 ºC (summer). About the humidity, it is close to a Cambria. As you probably know, Cambrias need humidity so I sprinkle it with water everyday at lunch time. Do you think my Paph would benefit from this too?

Thank you

If window faces directly North, you might be having it in too low light. Northeast or Northwest would be better.

In Paphs buds are initiated by lower night temps, which happens naturally in September. Without making efforts to time the buds, Paph Leeanum should start to bloom late Dec to Jan.

My windows are all faced north or south... as a reference, I have a dendrobium nobile in the same window and I have no "complains".

Paph Leeanum is a hybrid not a species (insigne s spicerianum) so upper case L at all times. It usually looks more like the Paph spicerianum parent. It would normally be expected to have peak flowering season November/December in northern hemisphere, but it can flower anytime after maturing a growth.

If Den. nobile is doing well in a northern window long term it must be exceptionally open and bright, and should be enough for Paph Leeanum. Otherwise, your condiitons should be adequate. I don't think water on the foliage is necessarily a benefit for most orchids, but I would definitely avoid it for a Paph on a cool and cloudy day.

If the dendrobium is happy, I'd think the paph would be too. Not to say that both couldn't become more deliriously happy...but just saying.

Leeanum is a sturdy plant.
If you get it right, it will be like a weed and bloom very well for you.
Good luck!
It's a great beginner (and for advanced alike! plant.
You will love it.

Here are some photos of the window (and the paph, the cambria and the Dendrobium).
As you can see, the window is very large so I guess there's enough light. What do you think?
Please remember that I live in a European southern country with plenty of sun.

Having never lived in Europe, that's meaningless me (as far as intensity of sun),but if those dends have grown there at least a year, I'd say it should work. They don't look unhappy, if a bit dark green (indicating they could take more sun)
