Any longer!

skip the story if you want to

I'm not a winter lover whatsoever! I love being in the greenhouse; I'm sure you know where this is going...

My first trip out to the greenhouse, I saw this delenatii with two growths, one growth in bud, for $15. I almost got it then, but my p. sukhakulii just blasted a couple days before that. I wasn't ready to get another paph in bud and be upset if it blasts.
Every time I went, I saw it. It just sat there.. waiting to be pampered. I decided on Saturday I wanted to give him a try. I won't be too upset if he blasts. Once the bud/bloom is gone, I'm going to baby/pamper him
I mainly got him because I like the foliage. Some of the leaves aren't in great shape, but I think with some care he'll look much nicer. He's more blue/purple than green. Some of the upper leaves have a darker ring around the edges, and the underside is almost completely solid (parts of the base are spotted.) To me it's almost like a dark purple with a slight red hue?

My phone gives the impression of warmer (yellow) colors, so I edited one photo while sitting next to the paph to give a better example of the color temp. The green leaves in the photo are from a phal.

Closest color correction.

What do you guys think of the plant's potential quality? I'm not familiar with variations, but to me he looks a bit darker than a normal delenatii but not dark enough for a dunkel.
Also, do you think it was a good deal?

Btw: this paph came from (Erich) Michel Orchid Nursery. I don't know when his plants moved to Hilltop's.

I think the price is excellent for one that is close to blooming. I don't collect Paphs so I am not sure about the variation. I do hope it will prove to be a fragrant one!

I know what you mean about being unable to resist. I just did a second online order in less than three weeks. Four more orchids will be arriving tomorrow. This has been a long winter and the fact that my shelves are full just isn't going to stop me, I guess. :|

That's a good point too! Being around orchids makes it feel more like summer. It makes me happier
I don't know when I'll slow down.. There's so many I want! I do think I'll slow down once I run out of room **or lack of continuing to build more room
Then after awhile, my collection will dwindle off to what I really love: Sell the ones I don't want, and maybe replace them with something else.

I'm pretty much the kind that's all in or all out, but yet I'm still indecisive. I feel that the best way to learn what works for me is to try a little bit of everything and I'll learn from it as I go.. Start out with a few.. Then build on when I feel I can handle more of that type.
It's hard to say for sure since I'm new though, but I'll try to explain what I mean.
In the short time that I've had phrags, they've been growing, most of them pretty fast. I feel pretty comfortable with them so I'm not afraid to pick some more out.
I'm not too confident with paphs yet, but I know what I did wrong now. I kept them too dry. So now that I know they like humidity and when they like to be watered, I'm going to try some new ones, even in different groups to get a taste. I won't know what works for me unless I try it

I did have a few Paphs and did quite well with them but I really like fragrant orchids and they took up too much room for not being fragrant. If I find a wonderfully fragrant Paph. delenatii at an orchid show, I will probably buy it.

I have really gone through different types of orchids while trying to figure out what I enjoy growing. It has been fun, though, and I have learned quite a bit through the entire experience. I think that is what hobbies are for...having fun while expanding the mind.

I am hoping very much that this is going to be my last order. I don't know where I will put any more of them.

What kind of orchids are you ordering?
I'm lucky that the del. was still there that long.. I usually see different orchids every time.

I completely forget about the fragrance aspect. I think phals will fill the bill for fragrance there was one at HT that smelled like red hots! I forgot which one it was though. I also got 3 new phals, and a phrag Saturday! Phrag schlimii x wallisii, phal. Shelby Katelyn x gigantea, phal. Krull's Red Hot ---(forgot this last part) x Violacea, and another I can't remember the name off. I'll have to look at the tags and post the complete names... Most if not all of them have awarded parents. I found some real gems, I need to stop being lazy and post photos.

I'm sure you'll find more space. I'll make a living wall around my bed and my shower if I have to!

I'm glad you got the Paph. As it was still there, it must have been meant for you.

I had to put the orchids on shelves under lights and limit the space set aside for them as some of my little trees are getting larger now and need more space (the other plants get the windows). There is no where else for the orchids to go (except for the Pleione--they are in the refrigerator for the winter).

I ordered Bulbophyllum baileyi, Dendrobium normanbyense, Dendrobium aberrans and Dendrobium prenticei. I am very excited about them. The aberrans isn't fragrant but it is really pretty.

There are a ton of orchids out there. You just cannot own them all.

$15 for in-bud delenatii is a steal!
The plant looks good.
It is a standard type not dunkel.
I hope it opens up nicely, which then would really be a steal. lol

Thanks for the confirmation! I kind of thought so, but what do I know?

He keeps moving along! He opens a little more every time I check. I'm just happy to have it, no matter what he is.

I couldn't get a good clear photo, but here's how it looks now. In person the color almost looks like a raspberry or magenta.

Thanks

I've thought about getting a dendrobium, but I have quite a few new chids in various alliances.. I probably should wait.
What kind of dendrobiums do you like the best? (Like den-phal, nobile, or the pendulous types)
I'm not sure how I feel about Bulbos.. I heard they smell bad? I'm making an orchid set up with shelving that was on sale at Menards; they also have a mini greenhouse for $17 on sale. it comes with a cover too. You can never have enough orchids; there has to be an orchid in every room. (just kidding)

I like the easy ones.
I have a phal-type Den, and then the Den. microchip, the aggregatum and the new ones. That will be enough.
I buy the nicely scented bulbos that smell like fruit or honey. There are many of those, too.

You can never have enough plants. Green is the best color for decorating!
