I bought an out of bloom paph which was a cast off at an orchid wholesaler. It has two spent fans and a third one starting growth about half the size of the spent fans. I reported it in small mix bark and sphagnum and inspected roots.

My question is how fast do these little guys grow and how patient do I have to be in order to see a new spike?

The plant itself is really small. I wish I had more information than just a picture.

By the way, I bought it for $0.50 so I feel like I can be experimental with it. They also had a few tagged cattleyas, in a sea of noid phals!

Once they get going you can get blooms each year. Yours looks well on the way.

Typically they take 10-12 months to grow a fan to flowering size. Then, after they reach a certain size (usually 3-5 bloomed fans), they start taking off. They then grow more than one new fan at the time, and often staggered by a few months. At that point they can grow new fans in 7-10 months, so they bloom 2-3 times a year.

Caution: Large plants sometimes develop rot in the center, in particular if you have used too large a pot. At that point repot immediately and break the plant up into several pieces.

Lastly, it looks like you have potted this one in a glass jar. Does it have drain holes (critical for orchids)?

Thanks for the reply. It's potted in a hard plastic container with loosely packed large bark mixed with sphagnum. I can transfer it back to it's smaller slotted plastic container. I had to repot because everything was smelly and soggy in there when I got him. I realize air flow and no standing water is a big concern but I really wanted to just dry him off a bit before any watering going forward. He's sitting on a low shelf in my living room with partial east light.

Hopefully he surprises me with a flower sooner than later. Otherwise, he'll be sent packing to my mom's house.
