Paphiopedilum Hsinying Alien
Default Paphiopedilum Hsinying Alien

This hybrid was very common a few years ago and I bought a bunch. Most turned out rather dull and boring coloratum with very nicely patterend leaves.
I only kept a few that were unique among the peers.

This one is one of those slow ones that took a looong time to rebloom. It last flowered in January 2013, so that makes it the slowest paph I have although it has two pubs starting, so I guess it is finally starting to take off.

I really liked the flower the first time it bloomed, so I wanted to keep it and I'm glad I did.

The same nice flat flower with colors I find very nice, but the size has increased quite a bit and I'm surprised.
The only paph that "improved" in a subsequent blooming.

I have two others that are in bud: one with very fancy colors and the other is pitch dark with nice shape, so I'm very excited.

I know this is rather a complex hybrid, but to me it looks like a result of a perfect union between sukhakulii and curtisii.

Hsinying Alien is such a variable cross. Some look like sukhakulii, some like Maudiae, some throwbacks to mastersianum. Sometimes I have wondered if growers were using it as a name to throw on any NoID in sight. Yours looks like a wardii cross to me. I like the very tailored lines.

That's exactly what crosses my mind sometimes, but with a bunch of species in the background, I guess anything is possible. lol

Vast majority come out coloratum with pretty leaves.
Then there are some surprises.
I kept three vinis (one is absolutely ugly in bloom, but best leaves!!!, then one is very nice, and other is alright), one colorful coloratum and this one, whatever category it might fall under.

It's the same with the alba one with the tag saying maudiea 'Napa Valley' x makulix...I don't know the exact name or order, but you know what I mean if you've come across with one or a few.
There used to be literally like everywhere and now they are making a comeback with Hsinying Alien.
Unfortunately, I have not seen anything nice out of that cross. at least to my standard. lol
