Two more OZ Vinis open
These two plants were purchased from OZ last February when they came to NYC for a sales show.
They were bought in bloom, but the flowers must have suffered a lot from travelling and did not last a week.
Both of them grew one fan over the course of about a year and now back in bloom.
The first one is supposed to be very large, but the size is not there this time. The other one is very small and the shape is just bad this time. hmmm so much for hundreds of dollars!

Lovely colour. I quite like the shape of the second one. I prefer the petals held higher light that rather than downwards.

I also like the petals held up horizonally.
The funny thing is that both of them had nearly horizonally held petals when I bought them last year.
One more reason not to be happy with this second blooming.
I do find certain downswept petals also nice, but everything has to be balanced in certain way.
Gosh, I sound so picky. lol

You are picky.
I love how uniform the color is on both of these, I do like the second flower a bit better. Something about it just seems more... delicate and lady like to me. I'm not as picky as you, but I'm not a fan of paphs with massive fat flowers. That seems contrary to the whole idea of them looking like a Lady's Slipper.
So, IMO, you did good.

I'm surprised at the above statement. I have to agree with RosieC and say, to my tastes, the shape of the second one is much more appealing than the first. As to the size issue, well.....

OZ brought many paphs of different kind, all in bloom.
All were hundreds of dollars each.

I do like the color on them. The second happens to be a small plant as well and the leaves are cute.
The first one, the plant is big and the leaves are just ok.
I'm very picky. hahaha
Regarding the massive fat flowers, I assume you are talking about the complex hybrids. I love them! They also have very large and shiny "slipper" which I love!
I also have very specific shape I prefer, and my taste does not go with the current American standard which is perfectly round shape. I find it ugly. lol

It is just that the size has reduced too much and I have never seen this happen on any of my paphs.
The main reason the first one was expensive was (according to OZ) the size and the absence of the warts on the petal, which are so common in many vini hybrids.
Both of them had nearly horizontal petals last year, but this time around they both have sagging petals.
I am going to keep them for the third flowering before deciding what to do with them.
I wish the second one opened up more flat. It would have been beautiful.

In looking at the pictures it appears that the left petal on the second flower is a bit wrinkly. Perhaps they got too dry, which could account for them having smaller flowers and different shapes than you remember.
I know that when my culture is not ideal it shows in the flowers. This winter I let my Paphs get too dry between waterings. As a result my Ho Chi Minh has a wonky dorsal and isn't nearly as big as it was last year. My sukhakulii has a slightly deformed pouch. When I correct my culture then the flowers should get back to normal.
That seems like a lot of $$ for vinis. Maybe they factored in traveling expenses. I know I only paid $45 for a blooming OZ fairrie a year ago, but I live on the same coast as OZ so it didn't have far to go.

I think we're talking about the same ones, because the ones I'm talking about have blooms that are almost completely circular, in fact, they remind me of a grapefruit when I see them, because they're a yellow green color. I've never caught any of the names of the ones I've seen.
