I picked up a paph recently with a convoluted name. Could someone suggest a way to simplify this label without losing the essence of the name? The name is:

(Paph. Ang-Thong var. alba 'In Charm' x niveum var. 'Pathana') x Paph. niveum 'In Charm'.

as far as I can tell your paph is registered as Paph Greyi
Paph. Greyi is Paph. godefroyae x Paph. niveum.

With double dose of niveum, the correct name is Paph Island Mist.

I wrote previous response from memory, shouldn't have.

Ang-Thong is not a valid species name, so this cross is actually Mystic Isle. If you cross that back to Greyi, you get Island Mist.

For OP
Paph. Ang-Thong var. alba 'In Charm' x niveum var. 'Pathana' = Paph Greyi
Paph Greyi x Paph. niveum 'In Charm' = Paph Mystic Isle.
According to OrchidWiz/Bakers ang-thong is a registered species - but as a pseudonym for Paph godefroyae. Yours is Paph mystic isle and was registered in 1988. I am surprised that the label was not corrected.

You shouldn't be surprised, since:

Botanist do not have much else to do, but revise names.

And:

Nurseries do not make money on changing labels (if they are even aware of the changes). Also, many nursery people are somewhat hung up on traditional names; my dad called Paphiopedilums Cypripediums well into the 1970's.

Exactly.

To the best of my knowledge, these are coming out of one wholesale nursery in Hawaii (I've sold a ton of them myself), all labeled that way. Yep - Mystic Isle it is.

I can understand issues with recently registered plants, I have found a couple - even 1 on a vendor website. But this was registered 15+ years ago, and the OP said he obtained the paph recently.

oh - I see the Hawaii nursery is at fault for not updating its records.....
