I am always tempted to grow some of my paphs in s/h to see if they would "explode" on me, but I read some mixed reports, the worst being sudden death of paphs after a couple of years being in s/h.
Regardless, one never knows until giving it a try, so I am waiting to divide some of my paphs so I have a mother plant as a backup in case the ones moved to s/h fail for some reason.
and how do you care for them? the way Ray developed??

My paphs transitioned to SH around Feb of this year. I grow them under T 5 lights, fertilize weakly , weekly. I also run a fan for good air flow. Flush weekly. So far I do not have a problem. I think it all depends on one's growing conditions. If you follow Ray's instructions you should do well. Make sure that the hydroton is throughly washed and soaked. Do not trasplant if your roots are no good.
Sudden death?? That can be due to many factors. I've had plants grown in other media die on me too, but truth be told I could usually pin point the reason. bacterial rot, underwatering, over fertilizing, you name it. Start with maybe 1 plant, see how it goes and then proceed slowly. Good luck
