Also, Petula's Flame have some really dark ones, I think your picture is just like one of them I have seen.

So you are looking for paphs with white dorsal and black petals, not vini.

I love vini, but also am on the lookout for nice macabre or something similar.
thanks for your correction. It took me a few reads to understand but what you say makes a lot of sense now

LOL... im trying to stay on the ground a bit. I would be scared to have a deciduous orchid because i would probably kill it lol. I have an obsession with black flowers though. The color black in flowers has alluded plant breeders for years. A black flower is truly a rare treasure.

I have seen some very dark Maudiae types with Springwater Orchids at the local shows. I think Krull-Smith has some dark ones too.
I was just gifted a Macabre x. phillipensis var. roebellini in high bud. The buds got broken off on the way back :c, so I opened the advanced one to get an idea what it would have looked like. The petals were BLACK. Dorsal was striped and pouch lighter, though.

If you want to make sure you are getting what you want, you have to buy paphs in bloom unless you buy divisions.
The variability is just too high with seed grown paphs. Some look so different that one wouldn't think they are from the same parents at all! lol

If you are looking for black orchids, not just paphs, there was a recent thread on it with some nice example pictures of nice black flowers.

I agree with you. I like black flowers too.
When I am shopping for any kind of flowers, whether is an orchids or spring blooming bulbs, summer blooming bulbs, I want to have the darkest of all. For example, this spring I had 100 black tulips (Queen of night) which I bought them in the fall and planted them in my garden.
That was amazing view, I can say. Also, now, I am expecting for my calla lily "Black Beauty" to bloom Black is, after all, a gem in the plant kingdom
