Blooming exotic orchids would certainly be good therapy for counteracting those gloomy winters.
Years ago I received a "best in show" in Toronto for a Paph. parishii I had grown and bloomed. A prior president of our local orchid society gave me my trophy and asked me how I grew my plants. I told him that I grew under lights. He then proceeded to tell me that I couldn't grow and bloom parishii under lights (this after just handing me the proof that you could). I then asked him how he grew his plants. "In a greenhouse" he replied. I then asked him how much sunshine the got in the winter. I had kept track of the amount of sunshine from November to late February, which amounted to about 3 weeks of sunshiny days. My orchids grown under lights (four 8' high output fluorescents, both Grow-lux Wide Spectrum and Cool White) were about 1' from the tubes and receiving 14hr of "sunlight"/day.

Moral of the story: Orchids grown well under lights can be better than growing in a greenhouse.
