I used a couple of keys in determining it was a sheath.

The first thing I noticed was how short the previous leaf was. I have notice this on several other paphs that have bloomed for me.

One other thing I look for is a slight reversal of the tip of the growth. Hard to describe but I will try. In a leaf I have noticed that each edge of the growth tend to curve towards each other all the way to the tip. In a sheath I have noticed a little hook shape near the tip where the closed end usually curves back on itself instead of continuing toward the open end where the leaf edges would be.

I think I could also see it was a lot darker than a normal leaf growth.

I am tricked by leaves sometimes though so I usually wait to get excited.

The first one is still lengthening. I am not sure how most measure them. I measure from the top of the horizontal portion to the tip of the petal without stretching it at all. That length was 10.3 inches the last time I measured it. If you include the horizontal part, it would be somewhat more.

The last bud just popped its petals and I will post another update this weekend. I am hoping for some natural light even though it is supposed to be really cold.

The pot is 6 inches across and 6.5 inches tall. There are not any new growths, but there is still one unbloomed growth that is maturing.

I don't really recall how long it has been in this pot. It was mid to late Summer I believe because I got the pot from a garage sale.

Thanks for your info Steve...my plant was only one growth and suffered through a heat wave while we were actually in your "neck of the woods". We took a trip out West in August and while we were gone temps soared to over 100 for a week...I lost a lot of slippers. I have found mature plants with several growths do better for me in SH. I have another one growth MK..keep your fingers X'd.

Wow! What a flower Steve. About 6 months after the 'rediscovery' of Paph sanderianum, I had to give a paper on traits of hybrids of section Coryepetalum. Since there were no recent photos and few descriptions of flowers of P sanderianum, I stuck my neck out and predicted that few of it's hybrids would have the long twisting petals of the parent. My neck is much shorter now! Great job of growing Steve.

Thanks for all the great comments.

You should see Rose's MK on SOF. It had petal lengths approaching 14-15 inches!!!!!
