My absolute favorite paph is Paph. sanderianum. I don't have one yet but I really want one. I also love Paph. delenatii for its round, pink pouch and light rosy scent. It also has very beautiful, sparkly mottled leaves unlike any mottled leaf orchid I've ever seen. I also love Paph. micranthum for its huge pouch and flower but tiny growths. I really like the parvisapalum type paphs the best, especially the species. I'm not to crazy about the maudiae type paphs. Except for the really dark almost black ones, and a few others.

I'm not too familiar with maudiae type paphs. All I've seen is hybrids, are there any maudiae species?
Five more paphs I really like are Paph. Keyeshill, Paph. Yellowstone, and Paph. Impulse. I also like Paph. Deperle and Paph. Gina Short.

Maudiae is strictly speaking a hybrid between laurenceanum and callosum, but the term gets used more widely for hybrids with those species in the background, and of that type.

Yes, as Rowan says Paph Maudiae is a hybird, however through common use it's become the name of a group of hybrids that have very similar look, parentage and care.
In some ways I find find the anoying, because although I have a plant tagged as Maudiae I'm never 100% sure it's actually that and not just one of the others like it. I've seen at a show tagged as Paph Maudiae (Claire de Lune), which should be Paph Claire de Lune as that's the actual hybrid name. I'm pretty sure some sellers tag as Maudiae when it's just a look alike. What makes me think that even more is that I've seen a seller with Maudiae listed as being in Green, Red, Multi-floral Green and Multi-floral Red versions. I'm pretty sure the correct hybrid does not come in red or Multi-floral so I equally don't trust the one they have just listed as Maudiae

This isn't a paph but I just found this out. A slipper orchid with no "slipper"! It's called Phrag. lindenii. What most suprised me is that it is a species. Are there any more slipperless slipper orchids?

I think I've seen red/vini callosums and lawrenceums, so that's possible. Multi-florals though?
I'm sure you are right Rosie. If not hybrids involving other species, I'm sure many 'Maudiea' plants are at least the result of several generations of sib crosses. I'm not sure, but I think that should be going by a different grex name?
I also think there's some iffy use of clone names going on. I don't think all the Paph. Maudiae 'Schwarze Madonna's around can possibly be divisions of the same plant (too cheap for one thing!) and I've not heard they've managed to tissue culture it...

Tissue culture is starting to come through in slippers, however I've heard it takes longer and is more expensive than growing them from seed, so no one wants to bother
