Flower sheath on my complex paph.
I guess the name is not registered, but the tag reads Paph. ([Elfstone x Henryanum] x [Lavender Lovely x P. Shamrock])
I bought it in bloom back in January. The then half mature fan is now sending up a flower sheath. It also has a small new fan going next to it.
We had some hot days and nights, but overall the weather has been quite cool, especially at night.
I thought this cool night triggered this plant to decide to bloom this time of the year, which I think is odd for complex paphs to bloom?
Or it has a strong influence from Henryanum which is from sub tropical Southern China?
Either way, I continue to put extra care on this guy by moving the pot between under LED setup by day and by the open window by night.
I'm curious to see how the flower develops.
The first picture shows the flower from this past winter. The following two pictures are about two week old and now the sheath is higher above the center of the plant and I can even see the bud inside.
Free flowering complex paph, how nice!

Congrats! How exciting! I'm sure the flower will develop just fine. Several of my Paphs are just starting sheaths! I check them like every 5 minutes. Have no idea when Strawberries 'n' Cream and Rosy Dawn SHOULD bloom, but for me, they'll bloom in the next few months

Thanks, I will. I think it will take at least two months from now though.

Thank you! I really hope the flower will develop through the hot summer.
I personally would LOVE to have Rosy Dawn ( the variation with no pink cast but either completely white with spots or white and yellow center with little spots). One paphiopedilum complex specialty farm I found has lots of nice ones including Rosy Dawn but their price is in the hundreds to thousands, which I cannot afford, or not willing to spend on a plant.
I read complex types develop buds best at night temperature 59-63 F and over 80F will abort them.
Then again, there would be exceptions depending on the breeding background.
I just thought these complex types were all winter bloomers. I bought all my complex types in december. well, I bought two more in March as well, but most were seen at stores in the middle of winter.
How are your complex paphs grow for you? I also read that the green complex are among the easiest, which are what I have. then I have one with spots. so far, all is growing well.

I have a gorgeous complex Paph. NOID from Trader Joe's (actually it had a tag, but the name wasn't anything I could find; probably should find out who the vendor is and call them up). It re-bloomed for me in Decemper, and stayed in bloom all winter and through April. Now the next growth is almost done growing, so I'm hoping for the sheath to start emerging by the end of summer. The two I mentioned in the previous post have been in my care for about 3 months now. I'll send you a PM with the info where I got Rosy Dawn; I think it's the kind you might like. It finally adjusted to my growing conditions, and I noticed a sheath a few days ago.
The Strawberries 'n' Cream I got on ebay, and it came with over 10 growths! As of right now, it looks like 3 will bloom.
For some strange reason, Paphs have been really easy for me, even though the humidity in my growing area is almost non-existent. I also have 2 more named ones that grow really well, and rebloom on each new growth. Because the days now are very hot, I actually let the pots sit in water... I know, it's supposed to be a no-no, but my Paphs and Phals like it in summer. The pots dry up completely in 2 days, so I have to water quite often now.
I also have Paph. lowii, which is in bloom now with 2 flows, and has one more bud. I got it 1.5 yrs ago with 5 flowers, but in my conditions, I'm happy with 3

Yeah, paphs are great! They grow slowly but steadily, flowers last for a long time.
Lowii must be so beautiful!!! I thought about getting one, but after seeing how large the plant is, I forgot about it.

Yes, mine only has 2 growths, but they are HUGE! Dunno what I was thinking when I bought it :big grin: It's not very convenient to grow in my small space, but I love the flowers so much, I had to have it!
