I like the shape and color of the delentalii. I find it quite elegant. The niveum is even more so, as is the white one someone just recently posted. Orchids, I have found, are an acquired taste. Most people give my orchid blooms a quick look, then spend much more time admiring the other flowers I grow, especially the roses. It isn't surprising that the only orchids commonly used in wedding bouquets are cattleyas and dendrobiums but that roses are far more common and stephanotis commands a higher price. So, because orchids are an acquired taste, I am not surprised to read what people have said. I don't find many people (excluding the orchid society) impressed at all with any of the orchids I grow. Even lilies are used more than orchids in floral arrangements!

I do think it's cute, but it does look like a hairy toilet bowl! Birds nests don't have lids, lol.

As for the Paphs.... wow. There are orchids that I don't like and even find ugly, but I'd never be able to make such strong comparisons! Why do you hate these Paphs so much???? I guess that's why orchids are so interesting, there are different plants for different people!

I wouldn't say I hate them... They are interesting. You're the one comparing that cute orchid to a toilet bowl. LOL

I was thinking of starting a separate 'what does it look like to you?' type thread. But maybe I better not if it's going to risk getting heated!

I wasn't comparing it to hairy toilet bowls, that the unofficial name of it is you go by Ron's pic!

Different people have different tastes. It's ok to be different, not everyone should have the same taste.

With that said, I love this comment, "As for delenatii, to me it looks like a fat pink face about to do a massive spit" I just got a good laugh out of that. Thanks!

I personally find delenatii not too appealing. It's interesting how someone mentioned it looks like a bird nest. It makes sense as well. I still think it's more like a toliet bowl They do have attractive leaves though.

Oh, and I love the brainy pouch on venustum. I've been wanting one for so long, but seen some not so desirable flower pictures, so haven't got one yet. I just don't want to grow something putting in so much time and effort and then, the long waited flower comes and it is not what I like and toss the plant.
I normally get plants in bloom so I know what I like.

Anyways, I just found a website where they offer venustum for cheap price, but not in flower. I thought they are spicies, but they come in a few different shades or shapes? hmmm

Oh, last but not least, one of best female friends, she hates all of my lady slipper orchids saying the pouch remind her of certain male body part.
So you are not alone. and I never looked at it that way and I am a man. ha~

Well I guess you'd be seeing it from a different angle!

I mainly choose venestum because the leaves look amazing! But I'm sure I'll be totally delighted when it flowers.

It is interesting as to what many orchids resemble, if you think about it. I have seen many that resemble other flowers. That would be a cool topic. Now, if you get into the psychology of me liking paphs that resemble toilet bowls, that would not be cool. : )
Actually, Rowengreen, I think this is fun. We all find beauty differently. I remember seeing a famous Picasso as a child and NOT being impressed. And, yet, Rembrandt's paintings, in real life, just awed me. Flowers are all works of art, more intricate than the greatest artist could render, and we are free to admire them or not. By the way, I have a very ugly zygo. If the next bloomIng doesn't smell as divine as promised, I may need a larger paph to flush it in [ of my pink or white ones : ) ].

I would love to have venustum as well. I just have to find the right flower shape and color based on pictures post on this vendor's website hoping mine will look the same or at least very very close.

I once saw large specimen of venustum with many flowers on it. It was quite something!
Now I just took a few tuberous begonias out to a garden, so now there's more space. I think venustum is quite small a plant, so I'm really tempted now. hehehe

I just started a new thread: http://www.orchidboard.com/community...tml#post494796

Yep, you should definitely get a venestum. See what your mate thinks of it when it flowers! LOL
