Default Paphiopedilum hainanense

Paphiopedilum hainanense, a species in the appletonium group, that is native to Hainan Island off of mainland China. It is a warm growing species that adapts quite readily to artificial culture. This blooms twice a year. The mottled leaf stays compact and tends to throw multiple growths. It’s the first blooming for this plant so it only gave me a single pink, green and tan flower. I read somewhere that the flowers last 2 – 3 months; its on its second week of bloom. As the plant matures and develops multiple growths, it can produce multiple flower spikes that are reminiscent of a flock of birds in flight. I will once again await this plant to flower in the fall.
I grow this like I care for my Phals…I wait till the media is dry then I water it. This stays in the east facing bathroom window and avails the morning steam of the shower. It gets a weakly weekly algoflash fertilizer alternated with seaweed mix and worm tea mix in the warmer months and in winter it gets twice a month feeding… since it is in bloom it doesn’t get any fertilizer. This is a tiny plant in a 2” pot with small sized Paph mix.

Oooh!

Definitely have to get me one of these when I've gotten a bit warmer in my Paph-owner clothes. Beautiful plant, and thank you for showing the entire orchid and not only the flower, I'm a sucker for Paphs with mottled foliage.

It's a mini Paph? Then I really have to get one. Excuse me, off to check some vendors now.

Nice one Bud. I really like the way Paphs can show off their glossiness in photos.

Thank You, Dave ! I really do appreciate your positive input. Yes, Paphs can be glossy and hairy ... that adds to its beauty.

Very nice hainanense. I think the compact graceful Paphs in the appletonianum group are not nearly as popular as they should be. Not among the very easiest of Paphs to grow, but definitely in the second tier of easy. The spikes are often much taller than this one, with the flowers hovering like dragonflies high above the foliage.

Thank You, Bill !

Thank You, Gloria !

Thank You PaphMadman ! You are right, it could of been a longer spike but if you look at picture 5 there is a mechanical bend that have stunted its growth...oh well...until the next bloom then.
