Amaryllis should bloom at least once per year. Sometimes, twice, but that is not common.
If yours do not bloom, I think it is either diseased (well, even diseased ones usually bloom as well! lol ) or growth was not good enough to produce flowers. If bulbs fail to reach certain size, they will never ever flower, only leaves in attemp to feed its bulb.
Check the growing condition, or just toss it and get a largest possible bulb, so you will see flowers. Good sellers indicate on their website how big the bulbs they sell are. Try to get nothing smaller than 32cm.
Remember full sun at least a few hours a day is the most important.
I agree with you. Paphs look so much better in group.
I like the look and how long they last, but they always produce single lonely flower. well, at least the ones I have except for Honey which made three flowers, but not that longlasting.
Anyways, I think I will keep them in group like this until each one gets fairly large, at which point, I will have to give some away to make space.
I need a bigger house!

I agree that Parvis tend to have oversized pouches. I don't really like the really off-balance ones like fanaticum or micranthum. They look too much like toilets.  I do like malipoense, because it's usually fragrant, which is rare among Paphs.
They are growing on me, slowly. So far I prefer the Parvi hybrids, because they tend to have more proportional pouches. I have 2 so far, Fumi's Delight and Lynleigh Koopowitz. They don't seem anymore difficult than Maudiae types and are growing quite well for me, both at home with my parents (Lynleigh) and in the horribly dry environment of Pullman, WA (Fumi's Delight). |
Yeah, the whole forcing thing is for commercial purpose because it has become a huge trend to have amaryllis around Christmas. Normally, they will bloom in the spring time. and sometimes, they bloom again in the summer or fall. That seem to depend on the variety and the growing condition (I believe temerature and how healthy they are).
Anyways, You can try and give them a "rest" in the fall when the weather gets much cooler. Just stop watering them. Then they may or may not respond by yellowing leaves. Then you keep them cool and dry for at least two months.
If they do not yellow, then I water them again and keep them evergreen. Either ways, they flower at least once a year.
Agains, getting lots of sun is the most important while they are growing leaves. and of course water well, otherwise the bulbs won't grow as much. After all, it's most made of water.
By the way, today at farmer's market, I found two more varieties. so happy with them. I wasn't planning to buy more Amaryllis anytime soon as I already have quite a few, but those varieties were already on my wish list and this guy had them both. How lucky!!!

Do you have malipoense? I read the description of their scent as raspberry. I like the taste of raspberry but do not recall if they smell anything??
I do have two paphs that smell nice. One is Honey and it has a rose fragrance. The other one is a cross of In-Charm greenery and In-Charm white. I can't really describe the scent, but it is nonstop (emits fragrance both day and night), which I find is unusual for orchids.
I found one store here had a paph hybrid that has delentii in it. I thought the leaves were amazing! dark green with silver grey pattern and the backisde of the leaves were dark purple. It was a multi flowering type too. The store owner strongly recommended it to me as he had only one left, but it was still in bud, and it was quite small. Well, if I see it in bloom in the coming weeks, I might get it. It's supposed to be white/pink by the way.

I just looked up the two paphs you have. I like the golden yellow color of Fumi's Delight.
I need more yellow in the house. The only thing yellow I have are oncidiums. Twinkle and Sweet Sugar.
Oh, I have one paph that's white/yellow and it's sending up two buds. I have started a thread on it. I think it has at least one more month to go before I see flowers.
I want yellow cattleya and phal. the ones that are yellow with red center. I want so many things. lol
