Deformed flowers
Default Deformed flowers

They looked so nice when in bud last month. Now they are fully open and all three flowers have some issues on the pouch and one of them has major deformed dorsal.

I like the color combination of the flowers though, and I like the overall shape of the plant, how balanced it looks. It grows very fast and has nice glossy leaves.

Well, I guess I will give another chance and see if they will flower normally in the next blooming season.

You have experienced one of the joys of growing Paphs. More than likely it will flower ok next time. They usually do.

That first photo has a real Salvador Dali feel to it, no?

It's still really great in bloom even with the malformations. That last pic showcases the paph well with the mottled leaves and tripple bloom. Really cool.

Thanks for sharing.

well...it is just newly opened...that happens to other orchids too...give it time to right itself up and bloom to a full maturity...they will reach to its full form and size. That flower gets bigger than that picture if you happen to research that on the net.

Well, it's the first time I've seen this happening. I have lots of paphs. I actually threw one really dark one away thinking it was too ugly with deformed flower.
Maybe I should have kept it. too late now. lol

I guess I will keep this one and see if it blooms normally next year.

No, I'm pretty sure that these flowers are fully open and not getting anywhere as far as the appearance is concerned. They have been open for many days now. They look really strange. almost makes me want to straighten it out. lol

I will have to wait for next years bloom until I decide if I want to keep this plant or not. I have limited space and I want so many other things, so competition for space is fierce here in my apartment.

I hope it blooms normally in the future, because it such a shame to get rid of it. The colors and shape are very nice indeed.

Default More pics from today...

well, actually, just now, so tonight to be exact.

They look the same...deformed...
I still like the color contrast and the overal shape, which is why this "ugly duckling" is still sitting in my apartment.

Two of the spikes stood up straight nicely, but one curled a bit to the light source, so I put them all together with a rubber band. I like flowers grouped close together like that.

NYC,

There's a thread on the OB titled "Coban Orchid Exhibit". In the second group of pics there's a deep red paph with this same Dali malformation. Check it out. Perhaps it's a know issue for paphs?

Thank you, J. I just checked it out. The beautiful vini paph. I don't know the cause for the malformation.
hopefully it's temporary. I'll have to observe the next bloom. I have lots of paphs and none of them had malformed flowers. Well, I had one really dark vini that opened up weird and I threw it away. it was really really bad. lol
