Default Paph venustum or not???

Check this out, I have been growing these two plants I bought from a nursery at least 4 years ago. They have been slow growers but I had great hopes as they are now good size seedling. Well a miracle happened and they flowered, the label reads:

venustum alba 'No. 1' x venustum alba 'Flat Petals'

I would put money on them not being albas.......ha ha ha......and I would even say they are venustum x wardii.

What do you think? A lot of effort.......I am selling the taller stemmed one and keeping the one with the red in the petals as I think it has some potential to improve (although it will never be a show winner). Anyway I know I have nice plants but it's still disappointing........by the way they are grown cold, down to freezing.......

Paph. Double Deception looks very much the same

Paphiopedilum venustum ‘Blatant' x Paphiopedilum sukhakulii ‘Emerald'.

I cant see if the green wraps around the back of the pouch on yers

indeed very nice plants mister

I think the taller one looks better to me though..It has not so much noticeable fade out in the color on the pouch...

I am certainly no expert... and you as a judge have seen more than I will ever see. Having said that, I would agree that the petals not being white/green is probably an indication that it isn't an "alba". As to what it might be crossed with, again you'd be more knowledgeable. The thing I like the most about venustem is the pouch and the venation. I can't see it well in the 2nd picture which may be just the manner in which the picture was taken but I do like the coloration on the petals better in the 2nd one but the pouch of the 1st. Boy, I'm a big help!

I'm willing to bet big money on the fact that it is indeed Paph Varuna, which is as you said venustum X wardii. I also would keep the second one, I would like to see the petals flatten out a bit more and would like it even more if the synsepal was larger and visible from the front. But all in all not a bad flower, even if it is not what you worked so hard to bloom.

Thanks, yes I did know that it wasn't pure venustum but I also don't see many venustum hybrids here. I wasn't sure what the other parent was until someone told me. Well looks like the taller plant is sold and the one with the red I will keep. I think Veruna is right.

Thanks everyone for confirming it!
