Default How adaptable are warm-growing Paphiopedilums to cool/intermediate temps?

I have one Paph. 'Macabre' that I succeeded in blooming this year and now I want more! Trouble is, most of the ones that catch my eye and fit my budget are listed as warm to hot growing by IOSPE.

So my question is, how tolerant are warm to hot growing paphs, such as philippinense or bellatulum, to cool/intermediate temps (69-70F days/63-65F nights in winter, similar but up to 75F days in summer)?

Also, any recommendations for quality Paph vendors with reasonable prices (preferable offering plenty around $30 or less) are appreciated!

Thanks!

#1 you arent going to find many philippinense or bellatulum in that price range of 30. They start about 75 at Hausermanns and 175 at OrchidWeb.

Hausermanns has great paphs as also Kalapana Tropicals. First Rays here has some really nice well grown paphs on occasion ,if you can get one before he sells em all

Sorry Jason, Hausermanns has better plants IMO. Yours are too teeny tiny and WAY overpriced. I know you love them.

You have 1 paph and these are what you are looking at? Good luck

Read carefully anyplace you can find about the 2 you have mentioned . Not hard to grow but they are specific about their requirements needed for survival.

And always buy the biggest one you can find they bloom faster for you.

good luck mister bean

Thanks for the advice. I'm not looking to make my next Paph additions those particular species. I'll probably look for something easier (and cheaper) at first, but I was curious. I actually have one fairly inexpensive ebay vendor that I trust who occasionally has very interesting BS or NBS Paphs in the $20-$40 range. Of course they also have some like philippinense, rothschildianum, and some hybrids of that nature for $75 and up. I do like a challenge, but I'll probably try a few more beginner Paphs before tackling the tough ones.

Hi Evan, Those temps should be just fine for growing roths, philippinense and their hybids. Another 5-8 degrees would be perfect, but the paphs will still do fine.
You can find nice small plants at your price range, and half the fun is watching them grow and flower under your care.
Fox Valley and Bloomfield Orchids have seedling paphs at times that are reasonably priced.

Good Luck, Bill

Thanks Bill! I actually just won an in-bud liemianum x gardinerii on ebay and am bidding on 2 others. One is a NBS philippinense x lowii, the other is a Raisinpie. I figured the best way to find out is to try!

Now I'll have to check out those other growers too!

This should keep you busy for a while Evan. We bring you the finest Paphiopedilum, Phragmipedium, and other orchids available.: Piping Rock Orchids Most are in the $34.95 range or less. Of course the Roth's and sanderianum's are more expensive but you could wait for 20+ years for them to bloom too.

One of my OS friends ordered one of Piping Rock's complex Paphs and it arrived in low bud. It was just AOS awarded at our show last weekend. They have quality stock.
