Tis indeed - I feel a bit like a thread hi-jacker by writing this here, but, don't know if you'll be hiring a car or will be using trains, but Colchester is only 45 mins approx from liverpool street station. It's the oldest recorded town in Britian, has a castle and is home to the Beth Chatto gardens (The Beth Chatto Gardens).
