just a quick question.... - Orchid Board

I have a couple of paphs one is a pinocchio and the other a coloratum .....they have both decided to develop a few yellow places on the leaves ...I am wondering if it could be heat or cold related as the orchid room is getting harder to keep cooler during the spring warm up ...not soft and they are growing very well other that this ......they are also in very bright light but have been for a long time not just a recent change in light.

Oh and LOl the pinocchio has a new spike emerging from the center and another fan was in bloom when i bought it Jan the 28 this year and is opening a new bloom now....so they dont act as if it is a problem yet ....

Could it just be the increasing light? As the days get longer, the plants recieve more light, and turn a little yellow, which is also a good indicator that they need a feed.

I was thinking incresed light perhaps and they are in fairly high light... but feeding is regular and is not the issue Im sure since they are fed twice weekly at least.

And the coloratum has 5 or 6 new leads in fact

Sometimes if the yellow is in splotches, it can be a sign that the roots are rotting. I'm hoping it's just higher light levels!

Hi there John .... was the temp swings?
How are the roots -- you're feeding 2x per week??

temp has been anywhere from oh 60 to 82 ....roots lol paph pinocchio is in bloom and a new spike just emerging have not unpotted and as long as new leaves and spikes keep going am not going to ...had it a little over a month and since it and the coloratum both did this at the same time and both are in fact frowing very very well other than the very small yellowish spot or two am not thinking roots ...coloratum is in rice hulls and nothing I ever had in them has had roots rot.
Temp swing I am thinking ...light has not changed at all other that lenght of day due to natural light and that is just west window ...I grow under high wattage cfls and hps.

Feeding is my regular routine which has been as per directions on orchids plus ,and since I use a gal a day misting I use one gal every 3rd day mixed with fert and sprayed on and in medium .....have used this for a year and 1/2 and no problems before .....and the yellowing is very minor as yet just thought I would ask if temp getting to hot for say one day could make it show up....

I think you`re temps are fine, the dips down into the 6o`s they should be able to take although the higher tempts are`nt liked as much in my experience. But it doesn`t mean they would`nt do well either .... they can take it. What might be stressing them out is the combo of the two - very high lights with high tempts. I`ve learned this seems to be a no-no with paphs. Phrags are even worse.

I would pull one of thse paphs back for a week or two and see if you can relieve some of the stress and bring back some color. S`upt to you John
