It is now big enough I am hoping to see it bloom now so here is a picture....I can see the bud inside now when the light is from behind it and its filling out the sheath nicely....

I love seeing buds like that. I don't have paphs spiking/budding but I have several phals starting to open. What a cheer for the dark cold winter.

Nice! Nothing like a Paph. to brighten a dreary winter.

What's the top dressing in your pot? It almost looks like rice hulls.

Cheers.

drop in temps for paphs do set bud on many of mine so far and thats, pardon the pun, kind of cool

I look out for the water not drying fast enough on the leaves with the paphs in my cool room at night. I only water the soil with the ones in bud during the day where I know they will be dry before bed time.

hmmmm keep us up to date on it but I think your buds outer leaf has stayed wet for too long. may have aborted the internal growth as it looks flat and should be plump. does it feel mushy? if it does its gone...if not Im wrong....I know my re bud vini started out as a scary little flat dark sheath. It concerned me bec I have seen this before and its from getting water down into the crease .(yeah killed a few buds myself ) Rots them out. It maybe the coloratum starts out dark and skinny

Rj thanks for the advice .....I am still learning paphs for sure

The bud is not flat but it is not truly fat either ...and I did suspect it may have stayed too wet and have been more carefull lately about that....

IT has just barely emerged from between the leaves in the last week and actually if I hold a flashlight behind it to illuminate it I can see what looks like a nice bud inside so I dont think its hurt yet....It appeared about the 25 of last month so has been growing about 30 days and from what I gather they do grow slowly ....

will know more in a week for sure right?

LOL you got me curious so I took a better look ...the bud looks very healthy from the outside no apparent sign or rot or sunken spots ...it is a very nice reddish purple hue and the bud inside looks like it has grown maroe than I expected it to have since the last look see with a light from behind.....yes one leaf on this fan is yellowed a bit but I expect that after the bloom it is going to naturally and I do have several nice new fans growing nicely from the base ....I just treated with physan 20 today 2 teaspoons per gal and plan on monthly use as prevention from now on.I noticed some black spots on a catt last month that was simalar to the black crud that was on another catt last winter and it stopped it in its tracks ...last winter I had to destroy one of my first three catts I bought because I could not get rid of this crap....The big guns are armed and will fire this year.
