paph illusion bud
this is a paph illusion from orchid.web which is a sukhakuli fat boy and raisan pie fernbrook cross..very cute little paph bloom with a purple pouch, greenish petals with leopard spotting and a flame vini dorsal
one fan and a bloom on such a small one and I really think it needs extra something bec its not a very strong plant after its comedy of errors in being delivered in a timely fashion
I hope the bloom doesnt wear it out before it develops a new fan...

Really cute, can't wait to see it bloom.
I had one which seemed to get worn out by blooming. It did nothing for about six months after the bloom finished (it only had the one fan) but finally a new fan did kick in (even had lots of root rot but it still recovered when I corrected that) and now while the new fan is small it's growing

I wouldnt have expected such a small plant 1st growth to bust out like that and as I suspected Rosie it could wear the plant out...I just hate to offer it too much water so for now Ill just increase the light level and see if the leaves perk up . I did take it out of the pot today and do a root check. its got a beautiful root system, not a single rotten one in that bucket . Its just so small and the blooms are hard on these..
it will be a cutie pie!!
and jen if you only have 2 paphs now ,you get that 1st bloom ,you will want more!!!
They just so much fun and easy.Thats what orchids to me should be are FUN ...

All my mottled leaf paphs have gone through periods of limp leaves, especially when flowering. I find water does seem to help... but that's when I then rotted the roots as I over did it, so you have to be really careful.
The one I mentioned above was quite limp for a long while and the old fan still is, but the new fan seems a lot better.

Y'know, I have a sneaky feeling you're right! I haven't had a flower yet and I'm already thinking of putting a 'Magic Lantern' on my Christmas list (... there's definately a delenatii theme going through my wants and likes in the Paph domain!!) x

Blasted bud blast
First paph I ever had go blast on me...I knew this plant looked weak. The bud was shriveled up some and I had to cut if off. Opened the bud up to inspect it and the pouch was all dirty brown dried and gone. When I got it I should have left it in the cool room instead of moving it around the few times I did trying to find the right place for it..
The plants doing better I think as its Got some color back ,the leaves are firming up..Didn't like traveling I guess...Wait for new growth now and we do this again maybe next year for this one

I'm sorry you lost it but, hopefully, the plant'll be stronger for it - Looking forward to next year

anytime you get any orchid in bloom spike or bud the odds are stacked against it making it...I think of 7 I have ordered in spike, only 2 actually formed out flowers...both from hausermann's...most the ones I ordered in bud had already bloomed out and been cut..(people dont update their websites)..uh cough cough..and still charge you the EXTRA 5 or 10 for one in BUD......but you take your chances and sometimes it happens...I'm just glad the plant started looking better.
The miniature paphs are very fragile plants and not very strong from what Ive seen of them..all the hybridizing IMO has given them nice looks at the cost of being fragile. an old paph species or primary hybrids are strong healthy plants generally speaking.
The infinite breeding causes these smaller plants to be weak and susceptible to the conditions if they become the least bit off center....the plant was just too small and weak to even have had a bloom..I m sure the guys at Orchid.Web would disagree with me...
its all abut making a plant that blooms in 12 months instead 2 or 3 years....you get blooms at the price of a plant

Sorry that you have had bad luck ordering in bud. I have received several in bud/bloom and have only lost the buds on 1 or 2.
