Paph Shireen - Deformed
I'm having a hell of a time with my multis, the squirrels ate the buds off my Julius, and now my Shireen opens up deformed. At least my Brassias are putting on a good show.

I certainly don't like to see that. Not sure what happened with the bloom, shy an ariel. Squirrels can get into so much mischief, sorry to hear that they feasted on such a delicacy. When I hear stories about wild creatures and how they can tear things up, sheds a whole new light on growing indoors. Keeping fingers crossed for a better showing next year, with an additional bud for this years mishap:wink:

Ya know Tony, I use to love those little squirrels even fed them alot, til last year. When they help themselves to half my orchids, including ALL my jewels, turn them into lil shreds of nothing

Paph Shireen - deformed
Has this occurred before? It is most likely genetic but occasionally can be cultural. Were conditions at all different as the flower bud was forming and/or maturing?
You may recall the two-headed monster that was featured in 'Confessions of an Orchid Addict'. Its first bloom flower had a double dorsal. Subsequent flowerings of 'The Fluke' have been normal ... until this time.
The joke at judging recently was which dorsal to measure. The flower got lots of laughs, but it did not get an award.

This is the first time it's bloomed for me, as far as I know it bloomed normally when Marie (MDK) had it.Oddly enough, the other Paph I got from her, Wossner Supersuk, also bloomed out deformed last fall. Maybe they just need more time to adjust to my conditions.

...maybe all of your Paphs. are mad at you for liking Dendrobiums so much... I would think that blooming is due to cultural conditions, not genetic...
I do like that double flowered Maudiae cross! Does it bloom like that everytime? On one flower, it could have been selfed!

'The Fluke's' first bloom in November 2003 was a double-dorsaled flower. Subsequent flowering in January 2005 and 2006 were totally normal. The current blooming again has the double dorsal and a crooked staminode.

Sorry Tony , It could be the move to diffrent growing conditions .
I have heard Super Thrive can cause odd things regarding blooms don't know if it is so or not .
Off and on I have had an odd shaped Phal. bloom show up on a spike of normals . Last year a Phal. bloomed out peloric this year normal . The next blooming might turn out fine on your Paph. Gin

I think the Dendros are sneaking in and there is a little hanky panky going on. Might require some sort of security system to monitor situation.

Have you confirmed that blooms were normal while in Marie's (MDK) care?
