I was wondering if this might be possible:

Crossing a bulldog (example: Winston Churchill) with paph. rothchildism.

Would this come out as a multifloral bulldog, bulldog or multifloral? Would it not work?

Thanks for reading this.

This is probably possible, but you would most likely end up with some really ugly flowers, slow-growing plants and low germination rates and/or difficulty getting a pod to set. I can't think of a cross like this that I know of, but a few may exist. It has probably been tried, so the fact that plants like this are rare or don't exist would be due to the inevitable low quality of the offspring.

Just looked up Winston Churchill x rothschildianum - the cross does exist. It's called Paph René Doll. I can't find any pictures though, so I don't know what it looks like. But at least we know it's been done.

Reason that pictures don't exist is likely because no awards exist for the grex. In many hybridizing attempts, the offspring is not an improvement on the parents.

I've seen a few multifloral x bulldog types at shows. they're usually single - flowered.
see this thread (on the slipper orchid forum site) for a photo of Paph René Doll. (last photo in the thread.)

Thanks for posting that! The René Doll isn't as ugly as I expected (it's actually quite pretty)! I doubt every clone turns out that good though.

I was asking myself a similar question when I was browsing through OI's catalogue too! I really wonder what the result would be for his Paph philippinense var album x Pacific Shamrock would be like

Here is a link to an Orchids Limited cross of a complex green Paph to a multifloral (haynaldianum). Two flowers, nice appearance. So, it looks like with the right choices of complex and multifloral something good can happen:

Orchid Web: Paph. Double Victory
