Default New Paph Callosom 'Jack'

Amoung several other orchids which followed me home was these two Paph Callosom 'Jack'. They were sold as one plant, but with two semi-circle half pots inside the main one and two plants. One of them has a small new growth.

The flowers are quite different to each other. One is free of warts on the sepals while the other has them, and one has more distinct lines on the flag than the other.

It's very difficult to capture such dark flowers, they really are a dark dark red.

It is somewhat unusual to see Paphs sold with a clonal name (like 'Jack') unless they are rather expensive divisions. These 2 obviously are not the same clone, probably not even the same species or hybrid.

The second picture (warts and lines) might be Paph callosum though it could also be any of dozens of vinicolor Maudiae-type hybrids. It does not appear to be the famous clone Paph callosum 'Jac' (no k).

The other picture could be a hybrid of a vinicolor Maudiae-type hybrid with Paph charlesworthii. Can you show a picture of the foliage?

Unless you can get some clarification from the vendor I think the identification of these is very tentative at best. Unfortunately it is becoming very common for vendors to be careless with proper identification if they ever had it. Many orchids sold in flower as inexpensive potted plants must be considered NOIDs (no identification).

No matter what they are, the color on both of these is excellent, and the form of the second one is pretty good. They should be easy to grow types. Enjoy them with or without an accurate name.

These were my thoughts too. I think it's a trade name and I think it is being used for a range of similar dark red hybrids.

This is on sale at lots of UK websites but I think they must just all get their 'chids from the same growers who have made up the names.

I love them just the same

I like the second one best and looking at pics of Paph callosum 'Jac' I can see similarities but I don't think it's the same simply because, as you said, it wasn't an expensive division.

I don't have a picture of the folliage just now, I will try and get one later today. They are both mottled but there is a variation in the pattern of the mottling between the two.
