Default Browning tips

Hi all;

I have a Paph. 'Maude's Ruby' that is growing like crazy but is developing brownleaf tips. They brown back about an inch and then it stops.

Any ideas?
Thanks.

Cheers.
Jim

I am not an expert but I have had this happen to me with house plants. I believe it is either a sign of lack of humidity & or too much direct light.
Every time I have had plants start to do this I have either changed their places in front of the same window or even move from W facing windows to East.) and sprayed them a bit ..
(not that diligently as my orchids are more important )
I hope this helps you figure out 'the problem'

Jim, I've always assumed it was too much fertilizer and/or not enough water. I don't have a clue but I'd really like to find out too as I have several that do this.

I know they like fresh potting medium and I try to pot them in fresh stuff every 6 months or so. I don't always get to it so often, though.

I never thought about it being too much light!

I'm wondering if it could also have something to do with the heat?

I hope someone comes along that can give us some insight!

Oops, I guess some cultural info would help.

The plant is in an east facing window, growing semi-hydroponically (S/H), watered/fertilized twice each week with 125 ppm MSU. Occasionally flushed with dehumidifier or well water.

Cheers.

I agree, sounds like to much ferts, 2x per week is alot for a slipper. On the bright side - its easy to correct, just use less, Jim

Yep, too much fertilizer. Paphs and Phrags are notorious for leaf-tip die-back due to too much fertilizer. Or, as Gin says, too much salts accumulated in the growing medium. And, if you use the S/H clay pellets, they can definitely absorb and accumulate salts.

Do you speak about 125 mgr/1L of fertilyzer or 125 mgr/1L nitrogen? Because my paphios receive 125 ppm nitrogen per week without problems.

I think he means 125ppm N. Once a week is fine for paphs, but 125 twice a week is a bit much, which is what he was doing. Personally I use much less for my paph, it gets 80ppm N, along with the masdie. I don't want to take risks, and it seems to be enough since the masdie is spiking and the paph is growing well.
