Paph Maudiae confusion - or have I just not understood

Ok, so I'm confused (not difficult).

I had got the impression that Paph Maudiae was a species. Is that right?

If so, then how come there are both multi-floral and single-floral versions

Or have I just not understood and there can be this sort of variation in a species... or is it not a species at all... I'm confused

I know species can have colour variations so is this something similar?

Also I see a lot of Paphs labled as 'maudiae type'. Assuming that maudiae is a species, then are these hybrids with a lot of maudiae in their ancestry?

Just wondering if anyone can clear up my confusion.

Paph Maudiae is hybrid of Paph callosum and lawrenceanum. It is usually purplish, white and green but there are green and white versions and much darker versions as well. It is not multiflora, but some of the "Maudiae types" made from it or from similar species are multi-floral.

I assume the 'Maudiae types' are ones with a high percentage of the same parantage, is that correct?
