Default Paphiopedilum wilhelminiae

Forgot to post a picture of this one here... A favorite of mine, classified under Section Coryopedilum.

This species is native to Irian Jaya and Papua New Guinea, from 5,000m to 6,000m elevation. This species is also part of a sectional complex, but distribution and some morphological characteristics can seperate the species apart.

Paph. wilhelminiae has also been known as Paph. gardineri. Because there is lack of information and material on Paph. gardineri, it is hard to say that this taxon exists, or that it is a nomenclatural synonym of Paph. wilhelminiae. I personally keep the two epithets seperate, and consider Paph. gardineri to not even exist.

Pat, whats the genus on this? Paphiopedilum or Coryopedilum? Is Coryopedilum a genus? Its a really really nice looking slipper orchid. The pattern on the dorsal petal is awesome!

Tin,

This is genus Paphiopedilum. Within Paphiopedilum, there are 'Sections', which basically further split the genus into groups based upon floral morphology.

Perhaps I should write a thread for a further understanding on these Slipper genera...

I see, so its got subgenera. I wasn't aware of it. Starting a thread on this subject would be great Pat! Maybe include a few papers as references if you can.
