New to Paphs. Help!
Default New to Paphs. Help!

Hello!

I purchased my first this weekend at a show. The guy that sold it was really nice, but I didn't get a chance to ask him much since my friends were dragging me out.

Tag says "Paph. magic leopard #8 x Paph Macabre #3
I've looked around on the internet for tips on this hybrid but I can't find anything for this specific one. I don't know what kind of variance there is between them.

Any tips on how to not kill this beautiful plant?

Here's a picture

I've got it in a shaded southern exposure in my kitchen, House is normally 68-70 and 75 in the afternoons around this window. It's around 65 at night.

How am I doing? I'm willing to set up a terrarium if necessary.

Thanks for any advice.

Your orchid is called Paph. Black Leopard. It has Maudie and collosum prominently in its pedigree. (all this is from Orchid Wiz). The Baker cultivation summary sound pretty much like most Paphs. Low light, Cool nite temps (but range given is 55-85 so most household indoors would be fine.) Good humidity. Don't let medium dry out. Any Paph medium is ok such as fine fir bark +perlite.

To Nick's fine comments above, Ill add don't be afraid to provide dappled sunlight or sun coming though window screens or curtains. Full shade isn't really a good idea. Watch that you don't overwater as the roots are not like most other orchids. They are hairy and brown most of time and it's hard to tell when they may be rotting. I watch for light tan root tips. Mine get weak fertilizer with every watering.

I agree with Ross. Most Paphs can take a lot more light than people think they can. I actually grow mine brighter than my Phals.

I also grow mine in moderately bright light. I was paraphrasing the information in OrchidWiz
