Hello, everyone! I am a phal person, but I just purchased my first paph! Unfortunately, I am pretty clueless about them. It looks so much different from my phals, I'm not quite sure if it is healthy or not. Are the roots supposed to be brown like this? As soon as I get my new pots and medium, I am going to repot and check things out below. From what you can see in these photos though, does it look like it is supposed to look?
Yep - looks normal. Yes - roots are normally brown and hairy - try not to touch them when you repot/depot. Normally they will want to be in media that stays a little more damp than your phals. The fan that has a stem cut off will over time pale-out and die off while the new fan will support the next new flower spike. As your plant gets older/matures it will potentially have multiple new fans growing at once - which means (lucky for you) multiple flowers at once! Enjoy!
I would also cover up the roots until you can repot it. You don't want the fine hairs on the roots to dehydrate.
When you repot, make sure the base of the plant is slightly below the new media. The new roots appear at the base and you don't want them to dry out, but to immediately go into the media.
