Linebred vini Paph. callosum. The species that started the whole vinicolor craze! The early days were well before my time but reportedly the first vini seedlings (early 80s?) went for hundreds or even thousands?

yo money man,

great blooming! we love the callosum for its foliage also...how is the mottling on yours?! its one of our best foliage paphs for sure.

another nice trait that we've found with this species is the erect flowering habit. i can't stake for anything so its nice when an inflorescence grows upright on its own, hehehehe.

edit to add: ours didn't bloom perfectly this spring, and the interesting trait of the pouch pinching up near the base didn't materialize like it should have. i can't tell too much on yours from the pic, but did it pinch in equally from both sides? to me, that is one of the defining features of this species...ok, second edit, i can see from the top edges that it did spread equally. nice work!!! we can never seem to get a 'perfect' paph flower. check out our vid of this plant to see our critical view on it, hahaha

anyways, love the pic, thanks for sharing!

very nice! I always liked a well-colored (non vini) callosum. The dorsal on mine had a little twist but I was impressed at how relatively flat it stayed. Didn't reflex aside from the tip. The foliage isn't that striking on this one, I think it may vary quite a bit with these. I have another callosum from a different vini-line that has really nice markings, with a top leaf that is heavily brushed with red.

we should have gotten a couple of them like you did. not to say we are disappointed in the flower of ours, but certainly the ones online that have the petals going straight down behind the pouch are some of the better looking ones. it seems that those are older stock, and most of the pics i have seen that are from recent years the petals are more upright. to me, that does not achieve the same effect.

plus, we won't be using it for breeding so i will stop being so critical and just enjoy the foliage!

be sure to post up a comparison photo when the other is in bloom!!!

I think your flower is more "distinctive" as callosum, actually. I like mine, don't get me wrong, but if I just look at it I'm not sure it is obviously callosum!
