My particular observation is that it is definitely easier to re-wet than dried-out sphagnum, and I don't think it gets as soppy if overwatered. Drying times are about the same for me (sphagnum vs. tree fern). I got a repackaged bag from Kelley's Korner, and the label says it stays good in the pot for up to 5 years. I would imagine one's mileage may vary, but I'm in the Sphagnum gets repotted once a year camp, so this might be beneficial if it lasts a couple of seasons longer.
