Is it bad to put them in pots with slits on the sides amd then into a outer pot with drain holes. Then into a saucer that holds water. Thanks again

In semi-hydroponics, there are two, competing processes - wicking the liquid upward and evaporation. The wicking rate is fix, as it is controlled by the properties of the LECA. The evaporation is variable, due to changes in temperature, humidity, air movement and light levels.

If W is much greater than E, the medium will stay moist all the way to the top, otherwise there will be a point somewhere in the LECA column where it will appear to be dry.

Anything you can do to minimize the evaporation is better. Slots in the pot accelerate evaporation. Putting the slotted pot in a snug-fitting outer pot reduces that, but why bother with the slotted pot?
