Paphiopedilum Henriette Fujiwara album - Orchid Board

Paphiopedilum Henrietta Fujiwara (Paph. haynaldianum album x primulinum album) first-bloom seedling. The flower has a natural spread of 4.5 inches/11.4cm.

It's been quite a while since anybody posted this one.

It came to me from Carter & Holmes as a small seedling in a 2.5"/6.35cm pot on December 1, 2016. I was still learning how to grow Paphs then. I didn't water it enough. Then I moved it to semihydroponics, and it began doing a lot better.

A rat ate it down to a small nubbin. It recovered and grew more leaves.

Last spring I moved it up from a 1-quart/liter to a 2-quart plastic S/H container. The last leaf at that time had folded over, which usually indicates not enough light. I moved to a spot where it would get more light. It grew two more leaves since then.

When I looked at it recently I was surprised to find a flower spike had grown to near-maturity. I didn't realize it is big enough to flower. Because I didn't see it, I didn't stake it.

This is the plant's original fan of leaves. A second fan is just beginning. The spike has this open flower, plus at least three other buds. You can see them in the background of the flower closeup.

Carter & Holmes says this is one of their most popular products, along with Paph. Pinocchio. They list seedlings on their Web site from time to time.

The shape and the bright flouro green/yellow with contrasting white-coloured areas - is really superb.

I used Advanced Search and found only a few threads here in the Paph forum containing "Henriette", but you can learn a lot about green Paphs in those threads.

I like the simplicity of its color...is it a warm or cool growing? From the photo it seems to be a non spotted one.

It's a warm grower that seems to like near-Cattleya light. It didn't mind winter night temperatures in my sunroom in the 5-8C range, but it was always warmer the next day. For some years though I've kept the sunroom above 15C at night in winter. Given what it's been through I think it's easy to grow, especially since its first spike has four buds. I have read its parent primulinum is considered a good beginner orchid.

I have also seen photos of it made with normal parents. They are nice, too.

Wow, this is gorgeous! Interesting that the hybrid is also an alba; I thought maybe there would have been genetic complementation for the pigment genes and the F1 would have been all normal-colored. I guess the species must be closely related, and the mutations must have been in the same genes that participated in the same pathways. Or maybe there's something else going on....

I haven't looked into alba Paphs, but I think breeders have figured it out pretty well. There are a lot of nice greens available.

What an amazing story with SH and rat and droopy flower! Is this orchid still flowering?
Could you please show me your set up for semihydro on it? Since you told me yesterday that their roots can cling to the pot, do you not worry they cling to clay balls?
I purchased 3" pot with opening on the sides for mine. Hopefully the moss will dry quickly with it.
