I'm not sure that it's actually a grande. I'll post another when it opens. Does anyone know if it is supposed to open with long petals or if they grow/lengthen after the flower opens?

Okay, my panic is starting to subside as I found some talk about the petals continuing to grow after the bloom opens. Earlier today I discovered that a species plant I bought at a different orchid show (phal Bellina v. alba) is most likely not what I was told I was purchasing so I went into panic mode when I saw this open without long petals. The only reason I bought it was because it had long petals.
I took most of the advice here and I am giving it wet feet in an open saucer using RO water only and it seems to be happy. There is another bloom forming I believe.
Even if it turns out this isn't a real Grande I will still love it the same. I will just call and raise heck with the grower as well

Re your bellina alba that probably isn't: I would look up the sponsors of the show, send them the photos, and try to describe where the vendor was in the hall. They can probably tell you who it was. People who put on shows want all the customers to be happy and all the plants sold identified properly.

That's a great idea! I remember exactly where the vendor was located in the hall and I had some email communication with the show sponsors prior to going because it was not in my state, so I'm sure they will be responsive.
I will wait until it blooms to know for sure but here is the link to the photo and thread in the phal forum about it, if you know about this species. I don't know much but I don't think its a Bellina based on the length of the spike. http://www.orchidboard.com/community/species/90166-phal-bellina-var-alba-supposedly.html

Don't panic they will grow. I have a Sorcerer's Apprentice x Grande they call it Les Diroules and it opens just like yours. And as a matter of fact it is opening right now as well. Any way the petals end up 6 or 7 inches long and they curl. I don't have a picture of it opening but let me see if I have one of it opened. I love this orchid. Yes I think you can see that the top one has much shorter petals than the bottom one.

Wow! That Les Diroules is so beautiful! Thank you for the Don't Panic! advice. I feel much better hearing it from someone on here. I will post some photos when mine starts to grow

Thanks, it is one of my favorite orchids, I love it. I have never seen a Grande in person but I would think the blooms would be as big as mine are. My plant is older a quiet large so my blooms have gotten pretty big. I will have to measure it.
I will await your pictures.

How beautiful. I have 3 phrags and was so scared or alarmed that I had to keep them with wet feet. I did so, and am still doing, and they are really happy and healthy phrags. Outdoors by my fake little "pond." In a sense, I see it, I have some Louisiana Iris that must be kept in swampy conditions just like phrags.

This is my phrag grande. It has one spike with 3 flowers that have been blooming for a few weeks, and another spike with three flowers just about ready to open, and another sheath coming up in another growth. It sits in about 1/2-3/4 inch of water. I have had it for three years and it has bloomed each year. This is first year with multiple spikes. The petals, when fully extended, are 17+ inches long. I hope it looks good in a couple of weeks for the Hilo show!
