Phrags..new growths need to be in contact w/medium?

I read that new growths on Phrags have to be in contact with the medium to survive. True?

On one of mine, two new growths have started higher than the level of the medium. What, if anything, do I need to do to make sure they keep growing?

The only potential problem I see in those photos is that the medium appears to be too dry.

I would take this as an opportunity to repot - a bit deeper. Even the mature growths are perched at the top of the medium, and the new roots that will be coming will get the plant established quickly.

That's nothing. My Phrag Green Hornet likes to get its new growths at least an inch above the medium.

The only thing I've heard about new growths being in contact with the medium, is that they won't flower unless they are.

Since my silly one keeps getting new growths so high up, I can't pot the plant any deeper. I've "solved" this by putting some small plastic bags with some sphagnum at the bottom around the base of the new growths. I will wait until the new growths form some roots, then I'll cut them off from the mother growths, and repot the whole shebang into the same pot (otherwise my apartment will be run over with baby Phrag Green Hornets).


I agree with PaphMadMan, a simple repot should do the trick in your case, and I''m not jealous at all...
