One rule of thumb is: Plant Cyps where ferns grow. I think that springtime is better, even for container plants.
Cypripedium calceolus, reginae, macranthum and a bevy of hybrids are on the market.

Cyps can prefer a little chunkier mix though. And C. macranthum may not be the best choice for a first cyp.

Here is a link to a German website which also has an English version. Mr. Weinert says under planting advice that autumn is best for planting.

I have seen one in a community garden here in NYC(don't know the name although there was a tag) with white flowers and really big balloon like pouch.

Last time I saw ( around late October), there were no above the ground portion left but there were lots of cute little wintering buds poking above the ground.

The location is shaded by a building but very bright and even get some sun. There are taller plants (ferns and some other annuals) growing all around the orchid. The soil is dark and fine, just a regular dirt in the garden I guess.

From what I understand, the person who grows it mulch those exposed winter buds just in case, and then take them off in the spring.
