Default Phrag. Cardinale, I think

Won by son Edward at last year's OS Christmas dinner, this had a tag that said, P. schlimii 'Birchwood" which is clearly wrong. We thought probably that it was Cardinale 'Birchwood'.

Very nice. I find it a coincidence that your son has a wrongly named one. I bought a Phrag. Cardinale a few months ago and the grower said it had been awarded years ago as Phrag schlimii 'Wilcox' which was later recognised as an error and it is really a Phrag. Cardinale. So it makes me wonder if its award is still valid? I would think not.

I'm not sure about that, but there is an awarded Cardinale 'Birchwood" but no awarded schlimii 'Birchwood.'

In my case there are some awarded schlimii 'Wilcox' but not Cardinal 'Wilcox'. So yours likely carries that cultivar name 'Birchwood' and mine doesn't carry 'Wilcox' as a Phrag. Cardinale rather than schlimii-very confusing!

It is indeed, and when you add the fact that many of the schlimii hybrids look alike it is really hard to know for sure what one has if the tag isn't right.
