I hope that you do decide to get one.
Oh, my mistake! I assumed it was a paph and it looks like one to the layman's eye :-)

Do the colors vary significantly between paphs and phrags? Even though I'm new to the hobby I haven't seen any paphs with that kind of color.

Phrags tend to be bigger and taller and more leafy than phals. Phrags are mainly from Peru and Southern America whereas Paphs usually come from the Far East. The colours vary slightly I suppose, you can quite often see pure white Paphs but in Phrags this is less common. To be honest though I have not seen a bright red Paphiopedilum such as this phrag so yes I guess the colours do sometimes tend to be limited to either or but not always. Pink is a very common colour for both as is green.

Hope that helps - I am far from being an expert so maybe someone else might be able to add something further but a rule of thumb is if you have a lot of space available then get a Phrag if space is limited get a Paph!

The flower is just gorgeous. I love the color and form.
Most Phragmipedium species are either terrestrial, epiphytic or lithophytic in habit. They show a unique shieldlike staminode, long, moustache-like petals and a 3-locular ovary. The large pouchlike lip is curved inwards at the margins. Susie is right, the acute leaves attain longer length than the Paphs. The stem lacks pseudobulbs and can grow to about 2 feet high, showing 2 to 3 flowers....some are found by the river beds and sometimes they are flooded underwater all through the monsoon rains....they require more light than Phals and Paphs....I have my Prags in S/H method and are quite happy that way.

Thanks for that Bud! I forgot to mention the watering habits that vary between the two and light levels. Great job!
