Phrag Grande NEED HELP think i have the wrong plant
Exclamation Phrag Grande NEED HELP think i have the wrong plant

Hi my name is Tessa and i am brand new to this site. I really need help with an issue. Heres the back story, i bought a Grande from a local orchid company. The owner of the company sold me what he said and is labeled Phrag. Grande ('Vista 4n' x 'Wanakee'). When i finally rcieved it i was then able to read the full name. I went online and the only thing that comes up is a pink phrag that looks similar to Phrag China Dragon. The crosses name that is pink is Phrag. ( vista 4n x waunakee). So of course i called him and he assured me that the Grande i purchased was a grande vista crossed with a grande wanakee. So i agreed. But now i can not find any grande termed grande wanakee. Is there a grande wanakee? Also ive analysed the leaves because i do have another grande. The leaves of the grande is slender, but the grande that i got from this local seller is broad and almost identical to my other besseae hybrid leaves like my Phrag China dragon. The seller also types all of the tags. Do you think he made a mistake and i have the pink china dragon looking phrag or there really is a Grande Wanakee. Please help i need to call him again but i do not want to unless i have Phrag experts giving me there advice. Thankyou

You have a Grande. 'Wanakee' and 'Vista 4n' are both clones(different plants) of Grande that were crossed to make more Grandes, of which you have one. The label is shorthand for Phrag. (Grande 'Vista 4n' x Grande 'Wanakee').

So it is not what i fear as the pink phrag. Not a mislabel on his part? Do you know a site that has a picture of Grande Wanakee? Thanks

I can not find a Phrag Grande bearing the clonal name of 'Waunakee'; if you wanted to investigate that I'd zip a note to Chuck Acker via his site and see if he has a clone bearing that name. I have seen quite a few Phrag. Grande 4n x Waunakee Sunset...
The parentage of Waunakee Sunset is Phrag. besseae x Phrag. Barbara LeAnn--which would account for a broader leaf.
Zip Chuck a note either way, I'm sure that he'll be able to clear it up for you.

I purchased a Phrag. (Grande ‘Vista’ 4N x Waunakee Sunset) and a Phrag. China Dragon at the same time from the same vendor a few months ago. Neither has bloomed yet, but the plants look quite similar with wide leaves. I am going to guess that the labeling is probably correct.

If you got the tag written wrong that is an issue ....but then you asked the local seller about the tag and was told that there is no mistake in the tagging of the plant....you better beleive the seller.
I dont think they will have reason to deceive you or lie to you.
I dont think they are too vain not to accept their mistake if they ever did make one....
What will they gain for it?

A question:
Does the tag read Phrag. ( Grande 'Vista' 4n x Waukanee) or Phrag. Grande 'Vista' 4n x Grande 'Waukanee' or Phrag. Grande (Vista 4n x Waukanee)? The placement of the parenthesis here makes a difference. If the tag reads exactly as you have written it above, then I would conclude that you do indeed have a Phrag. Grande.
Just my additional cent,
Adam

You are judging based only on the leaves? Grande can have long wide, strap like leaves, like China Dragon

There is no registered Phrag Waunakee, so that first one cannot be correct, and the other two ways of writing it indicate the same cross.

Can we see a photo of the flower?

Ray, Sometimes people(breeders) will name a plant for breeding reasons. As the case with Troy Meyers... He had me name some of my plants to id them of others.

Ex. If you have two Den kingianums that don't have names.. For breeding one may want to call one 'Purple Love' and the other 'Pink Ladies' to id the cross. The names aren't reg. but still carry the names.

As may be the case here.
