Cypripedium kentuckiense in flower earlier in the year
I have been so far behind sorting through my photos that I've only just got to my Cyp ones from May/Jun.
Anyway, this was the first flowering for me of the Cyp kentuckiense that I bought in November last year. It was difficult to get good pics with the sunlight shining on it, but it's a good memory of what a wonderful flower this was.
I'm really hoping I can get better shots with my new camera next year.
The first was the bud a few days before it opened.
Then when the flower opened.

The lip on this was really wonderful, really full and well shaped. And I love the contrast of that with the red flag and petals. |

It's very similar to Cyp. montanum, except for the yellowish pouch color.

I love these types with a pale pouch and dark flag and petals. Cyp montanum is one I love, there is a native british one similar as well (though very small flower) ... can't remember the name just now.
I think it's these types I want to get more of.

Gorgeous! I'd love to try some of these Cyps, just doesn't get cold enough here for them.
Do you grow your Cyps in pots?

Yes I grow them in pots. I have about 12" pots with the medium in, which are then set inside 20" gravel pots (just common garden gravel). The gravel pots both keep them stable and also give side protection from the winter frosts. The folks selling them in the UK say that while they like cold over the winter, if you grow in pots there is a danger of frost from the side which they don't like/expect (only from above) so they should be in pots large enough to protect from the side. I also cover them in the winter as everyone here seems to agree that they like DRY cold, rather than wet cold, so our winter rain should be kept off them.
